Every January 1, the SMIC is automatically raised based, in particular, on inflation excluding tobacco observed for the poorest 20% of households. This was the case on June 1 (+2.41%), due in particular to the sharp rise in energy prices. On this basis, it was increased by 1.18% as of January 1, 2026.
The main unions want an increase greater than the automatic adjustment.
This corresponds to an increase of about 1.5% (€22.07 net per month), well below union demands. An automatic increase also applies during the year if inflation exceeds 2%. The CFDT is calling for a €100 net monthly increase, while the CGT is demanding an extra 10%, or about €150 net.
The SMIC, the legal minimum hourly wage, is set at €12.31 gross per hour (€9.74 net), or €1,867.02 gross per month for 35 hours (€1,477.93 net). The monthly minimum wage, currently €1,477.93, will be automatically raised on January 1, 2027.
