Wayne Rooney was presented with the pundit of the year award at a London ceremony attended by 650 people from the sports television industry.
Chemistry with co-pundits was clear in the summer, including when they swapped microphones for oars after an erroneous Rooney prediction.
The prize recognised work that included analysis alongside fellow BBC pundits during the World Cup.
That moment caught some people by surprise, including fellow pundit Joe Hart.
His plain-speaking style and humour during the tournament connected with audiences.
He added that he always wanted to do better and be the best he could.
I do look at the other pundits who have been there a long time, Rooney said. Rooney said the switch from football to television had been harder than he first expected. Asked about criticism from viewers, he said: You do see it. I didn't realise how tough it was going to be when I first started doing it, he said.
