Heavy rains followed by floods have left at least four dead in eastern Spain, authorities announced Monday, October 19. They called on the population of the Valencia region to stay at home and avoid any travel.
Torrential rains turned some streets into torrents in eastern Spain, where hundreds of rescue operations were carried out. The last two people to die were found in the tourist town of Oliva, on the coast, badly affected by heavy rains on Sunday evening.
Videos released by the Valencia Meteorological Agency showed streets transformed into real torrents, sweeping away vehicles in several localities in the provinces of Valencia and Alicante.
The heavy rainfall particularly affected areas of the Mediterranean coast and fell with intensity on certain regions of the Valencian Community. In these areas, up to 700 liters per square meter were recorded in 24 hours, or 70 cm.
Authorities said rescue operations continue in hard-to-reach areas.
