Infantino apologised last week in Zurich to the Fifa council, which he chairs, for mistakes made in assembling a now-scrapped $4.2bn plan to sell chunks of the World Cup to private investors. The Fifa election is scheduled for March, with nominations closing on 18 November. Indications even before the AFC endorsement suggested that Infantino was edging toward a simple majority of the 211 Fifa member federations.
Addressing financial matters, Infantino stated that as of the first of January of next year, the amount will be $25m. He also remarked to Sheikh Salman that during their recent meeting in Zurich, it was made clear there is a true understanding between them.
Sheikh Salman referenced differences with Infantino in his speech but glossed over any details. This represents an abrupt turnaround for Sheikh Salman, following an open letter in which critics called for leadership that serves football rather than seeking to command it.
And always, always with my full support, with the partnership of Fifa, because we have seen what we have been doing in the last years."Asked later about Sheikh Salman's comments, Infantino said:"I feel great about the AFC's support."He also proposed to increase the amount of money handed out for football development across the world by $3.4bn (£2.6bn).
I think the last few we met in Zurich you made it clear that there’s a true understanding between us.” Even before the AFC endorsement the indications were that Infantino was edging toward a simple majority of the 211 Fifa member federations.
"You've been doing a fantastic job in AFC in the last 13 years, my dear Salman,"Infantino said in an address to the confederation's delegates.
AFC president Sheikh Salman praises and hugs Infantino “We affirm our full commitment to supporting you and your leadership as you seek a new mandate as the Fifa president.” Sheikh Salman said.
I know your feeling and I think your commitment is clear as well.” The Fifa election is in March and nominations close on 18 November.
