Antonelli secured his first world championship title at the end of only his second season in Formula 1.
During his shaky debut season, performances did not live up to his billing as a potential generational talent, despite flashes of promise.
The achievement followed a remarkable step forward in his development over the previous winter that removed nearly all jeopardy from the title fight.
Mercedes lost its early season advantage when rivals wiped it out, but Antonelli remained a consistent factor throughout the campaign.
Comparative performances between Russell and Antonelli during the previous year suggested the championship might have otherwise taken a different complexion.
Antonelli admitted he experienced intense emotions on the final lap while following Verstappen and Hamilton home."I was so emotional on the last lap as I followed Verstappen and Hamilton home that I was struggling to see,"Antonelli said."And as well to see so much respect from two incredible drivers who have done the history of the sport is truly special and a moment that will live and will always be remembered,"Antonelli added.
