In Paris, cycling has overtaken the car for everyday trips: some 11% of trips are made by bike versus 4% by car, compared with 53.5% walking and 30% by public transport.

In 2025, 235 cyclists were killed in metropolitan France, including 96 in an accident with no third party. In cities, motor vehicles were involved in nearly six out of ten fatal cyclist accidents, without that necessarily meaning they were responsible.

Cycling traffic rose 47% between 2019 and 2025 nationwide, according to the cycling and walking network, an increase particularly marked in urban areas. More and more users are choosing the bicycle for daily travel, in cities as well as outside urban agglomerations.

Nearly eight in ten cyclists said they had been victims of motorized violence over the past twelve months, according to the 2025 barometer of the French Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB), a consultation that gathered more than 330,000 responses."The very strong increase in cycling in Paris also leads to more numerous conflicts of use with pedestrians, but with consequences that are much less significant in terms of accidents and above all much less serious,"Dan Lert said.
