Clancy stated that tech workers deserve a stronger voice at work regarding bread-and-butter issues like pay and flexibility, AI deployment, and workplace culture. He added that workers would have a stronger voice as more employees at Google and Meta joined trade unions, stating he looked forward to seeing what could be achieved together.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak stated last week that he expected a wave of union recognition deals in the private sector over the coming year as the transformative rules on accessing workplaces took effect.

The legislative change allows unions to enter workplaces to meet workers or communicate with them electronically, addressing previous hurdles where unions often had to organize staff from outside.

Trade unions gained new rights to access workplaces in the UK as new employment rules came into force, leading Google UK to sign an access agreement on Monday.

Google stated that it signed the access agreement to comply with the new UK workplace legislation, while maintaining that it already possesses good internal employee relations.

Under the upcoming rules starting in January, employers will be required to inform workers of their right to join a union.

Previously, unions seeking recognition faced difficulties, such as the GMB union's thwarted effort to gain recognition at an Amazon warehouse near Coventry two years ago.

The newly established agreements will allow unions to communicate directly with non-unionized workers and encourage them to join.
