South African police arrested five people over the weekend in connection with a brutal attack on cattle farmer Donovan Marx, 50. Marx was ambushed as he returned home, shot, stabbed, and had his ears cut off in the ordeal.
The horrific attack caused widespread outrage in South Africa, a country used to high levels of violence. The arrests were welcomed by Marx's wife and family.
The attack on Marx comes as some right-wing groups have used such attacks on white farmers, who are often from the Afrikaner community, to claim there is a genocide against white people in the country. This claim has been widely discredited.
Police data show that most victims of crime in South Africa, including on farms, are black.
The five suspects will appear in local courts on Tuesday.
Police stated that two of the suspects allegedly approached Marx when he returned home and shot him in the upper body. The five suspects, aged between 26 and 56, face charges of house robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
