Eurocontrol’s daily count put scheduled flights in Europe at 26,709. Officials noted the threats represented only a tiny fraction of traffic.

Prague airport confirmed nine flights had been affected by bomb threats on Thursday. Authorities elsewhere provided fewer details than on previous days, making a full tally harder.

It was not yet known who was responsible, whether individuals or a centralised effort. The threats followed days of similar disruption to aviation around Europe.

A KLM flight bound for Amsterdam was checked by Dutch military police after a bomb threat. They confirmed no explosives were on board.

Civil aviation authority aircraft or helicopters were seen flying near some of the affected airports, including Prague and Bucharest.

Airports and national authorities continued to treat each alert as requiring checks, even as the volume of hoaxes grew.

An aircraft operating as ROT226M transmitted a 7700 general emergency squawk before landing safely in Bucharest.

Irish officials condemned the hoaxes for causing fear, distress and disruption to people going about their daily lives, saying the threats achieved no positive purpose. The main priority, they said, was to keep people safe despite the unwelcome disruption.

The Gardaí said they had been alive to the risk of such threats while planning for EU Presidency events and were exercising the relevant protocols. They said they and the Defence Forces were in ongoing liaison with European security counterparts. Further threats were distributed to media organisations in the afternoon but could not be immediately verified as genuine. Irish authorities said threats made that morning against media organisations were very serious.
