Striking images, including an urban coyote and an elephant carrying a dead calf, are among this year's winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
Following tracks, photographer Veronesi came across a female elephant carrying a dead calf with its leg wedged between her tusk and trunk. Initially assuming the elephant was the calf's mother, he later learned from an elephant research project working in the area that this certainty was questioned.
Describing the experience, Veronesi called it the most heart-wrecking, fascinating, and dramatic moment of his 20 years photographing animals, revealing the depth, complexity, and feelings of the animals. He hopes the image will encourage people to recognise animals as individuals with their own relationships, memories, and emotions rather than just focusing on their physical appearance.
Additionally, the competition highlights that you do not necessarily need a camera or a plane ticket to take an award-winning photo.
