More than 30,000 oncologists from all over the world are meeting until Tuesday October 27 in Madrid for the Cancer Congress (Esmo). Researchers announced major new advances in lung cancer, one of the most frequent, common and serious cancers, at this event.
Concerning the most common lung cancer, in certain patients the tumor expresses an anomaly which is targeted by innovative treatment. This new way of treating this type of cancer reduces the risk of recurrence by half.
This work demonstrates that two new treatments significantly improve the chances of survival of patients affected by this particularly devastating disease, half of whom do not survive more than a year.
The progress is particularly striking in the case of the most aggressive small cell lung cancer. The new treatment presented in Madrid will double their survival.
The researchers reported their progress to the oncology congress which meets in Madrid until Tuesday.
