This approach comes as the current agreement for TV broadcasting of Ligue 1 runs until 2029. The Professional Football League wanted to anticipate this deadline for the period 2027-2032. The choice to launch this call for tenders has the specific aim of attracting new players. They will have the choice either to broadcast Ligue 1+ or to create their own channel.
The board of directors of the Professional Football League validated on Wednesday October 21 the launch of a call for tenders to broadcast Ligue 1 over the period 2027-2032 in order to attract new broadcasters. The announcement was made directly by the body.
French football is currently hit by a drastic drop in revenues from television rights. Nicolas de Tavernost's successor at the head of LFP Médias, however, believes that the situation is evolving.
The launch of Ligue 1+ finally allowed the body to regain this freedom and approach this new stage with serenity.
“For the first time in a long time, French football is in a position to choose its future,” declared the leader. He added that Ligue 1 is attractive and that the timing of this call for tenders seems much more favorable than in the past to attract the interest of the main market players.
According to him, the attraction of streaming platforms for sports rights has undoubtedly convinced management. Among these players are Disney+, which recently won the broadcast of La Liga in France, Netflix, and even Apple, which had discussed with the LFP in 2023. This call for tenders, which will take place from November 3 to December 7, can now be launched for a single lot offering the broadcast of all Ligue 1 matches, according to details from the LFP.
