Currently retired, Pierre Coppey, the former president of Vinci Autoroutes, was proposed by the Elysée for the position of general controller of places of deprivation of liberty, among around ten candidates.

This proposal must still be examined by the Law Commissions of the National Assembly and the Senate. It will be followed by a formal appointment to the Council of Ministers for a term of 6 years, non-renewable and non-revocable.

Pierre Coppey takes over a role in a context where France presents the worst European record regarding prison density, tied with Turkey, with 131 people detained for only 100 places available, according to the 2025 report of the Council of Europe.
