Rwanda is set to host the African Grand Prix on a new, purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, located 25 miles south of the capital Kigali and next to the city's new international airport.

Formula 1 hopes the event will expand its profile in Africa, which remains a relatively unexplored market compared to Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The race is likely to be controversial due to previous accusations of sportswashing against Rwanda.

It has not yet been established where the race will fit into the annual schedule, and the sport will likely want to avoid holding the event during the main rainy season from March to May.
