Olechky and its last inhabitants are very isolated because their town is both under constant threat from Russian and Ukrainian explosive drones, which attack vehicles, and because the roads leading there are mined.

Ukraine and Russia recognize the humanitarian crisis there but blame each other for the situation, accusing each other of hindering food deliveries and evacuations.

This suspension of fighting should allow a humanitarian operation to take place in this isolated locality, where trapped residents have lacked food and medicine for several weeks.

The duration of the truce in Olechky is not clearly established.

Respect for the ceasefire is also not guaranteed, because in the past, the two camps have accused each other of multiple violations of truces agreed during this war which extends over a front of approximately 1,200 kilometers.

“As part of preparations for a humanitarian operation in the Olechky region of the Kherson region, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation ceased fire in the Kherson sector (...) from 4 a.m. Moscow time,” the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Telegram.

The population of Olechky, hit by serious flooding in 2023 after the explosion of a dam triggered by Russia according to kyiv, has fallen from around 24,000 inhabitants to around 2,000 today.
