On Wednesday October 14, MPs approved the extension of taxation on sweet products, as part of the Social Affairs Committee's examination of the Social Security budget for 2027.
The Social Affairs Committee thus approved the principle of increased taxation on the sweetest products, despite lobbying from food manufacturers.
The government text plans to extend the"soda tax"created in 2012 to prepackaged sweet products richest in sugar, including pastries, pastries, biscuits and industrial cakes, breakfast cereals, cereal bars as well as confectionery and chocolate products.
The objective of this measure is to lead manufacturers to change their formulas to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases linked to nutrition.
For their part, manufacturers were alarmed at the end of September by this project, predicting an increased bill for consumers. The RN, its ally the UDR and Les Républicains also tabled amendments to delete this article from the text, expressing concern about an increase in shelf prices and a further increase in French taxation, without this necessarily having any impact on public health.
