Elsewhere, strikes continue while the truce is under way in Oleshky. In Russia, one person was killed and six others were injured after a Ukrainian drone strike on Bryansk.

Many residents have resorted to cooking garden weeds to survive, telling of extreme hunger and an urgent desire to leave ahead of an evacuation planned to take place on Friday.

Conditions have become so desperate that getting supplies into the city is extremely difficult, and escape has been highly dangerous because routes out were mined and subject to drone attacks.

Ukrainian officials and Russia's defence ministry say the truce is being respected, though communication with the city remains patchy and residents fear reprisals from Russian forces.

A limited ceasefire is under way in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, allowing for the planned delivery of supplies and the clearing of mines from evacuation routes.

Kyiv believes that up to 6,000 people, including 200 children, remain in Oleshky and its surrounding areas, with only 1,700 still living in the city itself.

Ukraine's military general staff said that silence was being observed over the operation for humanitarian purposes. Officials urged people not to trust unverified reports or spread rumours about the routes, time and place of the movement of people and humanitarian convoys. Despite the local pause, concerns persist over whether the agreement will hold. One resident stated:"I don't believe in Russia's humanity.".
