Luxury boutiques in France boarded up their normally glitzy windows and added guards ahead of fresh protests on Saturday, with some planning to stay closed after rioters looted shops across the country last weekend.

France is implementing heavy security measures ahead of new protests with police, helicopters and armoured vehicles as well as restrictions on protests and local curfews seeking to prevent a repeat of the violence and looting which erupted during nationwide demonstrations last weekend.

Police fired several teargas grenades to clear the group protesting near a university faculty and the city's police station as part of nationwide rallies against the high cost of living.

Scenes of looting, burned-out cars and attacks on public buildings left the impression that the government had lost control, as groups of masked vandals targeted businesses in Paris and other city centers.

French police forces are equipped with batons, tear gas, sound grenades and foam-round launchers, as well as riot shields equipped with powerful strobe lights designed to disorient protesters.

Authorities tightened restrictions and banned specific protests in some major cities such as Lyon and Marseille.

Yet fresh demonstrations ‌are already taking shape before what officials fear could be another volatile weekend.

The restrictions, including outright bans on protests in some cities, have drawn criticism.
