The idea defended by the town hall is that if public money contributes to the success of the laboratory, it is normal for citizens to reap the benefits, otherwise the municipality will have invested taxpayers' money at a loss.
New York City has chosen to invest in quantum technologies in order to make public money grow and allow residents to benefit from the economic benefits if successful.
However, there remains a major unknown for those involved in the project: will the promises of quantum technologies really come true?
In exchange for its investment, the city will obtain three seats on the laboratory's supervisory board, which will allow it to maintain direct influence on the research carried out.
If the bet succeeds and the laboratory keeps its promises, this initiative will notably create jobs for residents.
