The Nobel peace prize was awarded to Navi Pillay, the South African former UN human rights chief who chaired the UN commission that concluded Israel was guilty of genocide in Gaza.
The Norwegian Nobel committee stated that in awarding this year's prize, it wants to remind the world that the rule of law, both national and international, underpins the system set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently.
The Israeli foreign ministry reacted furiously to the news on Friday, calling it the grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice, and stating that if there were an award for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Pillay would not just be a contender.
Previously, Israel refused to cooperate with the commission, arguing it was biased, and rejected its report as scandalous.
