Connected glasses should clearly indicate when they are filming, taking photos or recording sound, in the name of respect for privacy, the European regulator in charge of data protection (EDPB) demanded on Tuesday, October 13.
These mounts packed with sensors, cameras and speakers raise important questions in terms of the protection of personal data and fundamental freedoms, because people can be recorded without their knowledge, insists the organization.
Anu Talus, the president of the European Data Protection Board, called in a non-binding opinion for these recording functions to be made clearly visible, for example through bright LEDs, sound signals, voice commands, smartphone notifications or a distinctive design.
The regulator highlights even greater risks in sensitive environments such as hospitals, schools or the workplace, and emphasizes the vulnerability of children whether they use these glasses or are filmed.
