France awoke to widespread damage on Sunday following a day of riots and demonstrations that left Paris streets littered with burnt out cars, charred bikes, shattered shopfronts, and piles of glass and debris.

Protesters clashed with riot police in Paris, where officers turned tear gas and water cannon on the crowds. Riot police were also seen charging at one crowd in central Paris and hitting several people with batons.

Groups of rioters, some dressed in black and wearing masks and balaclavas, emerged in Paris, Marseille, and other towns and cities, with individuals setting fire to cars and buildings.

Widespread looting took place across the cities of Paris, Marseille, and Lille, as well as other areas during the nationwide outbreaks of violence and vandalism.

Authorities arrested around 1,800 people following the demonstrations and subsequent unrest across the country.
