Footage from 2002 showing a box of organic food waste dropped into the active lava lake of Ethiopia's Erta Ale volcano is circulating widely on the Reddit community r/BeAmazed.
The video, originally published by Photovolcanica, depicts a roughly 30-kilogram box of camp scraps plunging 80 meters into molten rock, triggering a violent, localized lava fountain. Experts attribute the explosive reaction partly to steam rapidly forming from moisture within the waste, rather than a broader volcanic eruption.
