After noticing that some phrases would not complete on his iPhone while others would, researcher Kauffman unearthed a table containing the list.

The so-called grey list, encoded in the operating system, stops swipe-typing and autocomplete from offering those terms. Users can still type them out letter by letter.

Those methods underpin Apple’s familiar autocorrect, long known for turning expletives into milder alternatives such as “fork” and “ducking”.

Apple said it designed its keyboard to avoid offering inappropriate or offensive predictive suggestions. It said users could always type specific words or phrases and override suggestions.
