A previous petition against the law on the presumption of legitimate use of firearms by law enforcement had largely exceeded 500,000 signatures, but it was shelved by lawmakers on the laws committee in July.

In parallel, many left-wing officials have called for CNews to be shut down. The four left-wing groups in the National Assembly are calling for a debate to be held in the chamber.

The shutdown of a DTT channel falls to the audiovisual regulator, Arcom, and not to members of parliament. If a debate in the chamber were held, it could not result in the closure of the news channel.

Several right-wing and far-right elected officials have defended the channel, such as Marine Le Pen. Contacted by AFP, she did not comment on the petition calling for CNews to be shut down.
