A demonstrator died from cardiorespiratory arrest during Saturday's protests in Paris, police said Sunday, stressing that the death was not connected to police action or to the clashes that broke out on the margins of the mass demonstrations across the capital.
Riot police launched barrages of tear gas and charged the crowds as demonstrators gathered at Place de la République ahead of the authorised march.
The capital's police prefecture reported that 13 police officers and gendarmes had been injured, alongside two firefighters, and noted that they had detained a record figure of 855 people in the capital during the demonstrations.
The public prosecutor's office added that more than 500 people were being held in police custody following the record number of arrests.
